Steve Carlton - affectionately known as Lefty - was one of the most dominant pitchers in the history of the Philadelphia Phillies. He played for the club from 1972 to 1986 and amassed a wealth of distinctions, including a World Series championship in 1980, 7 All-Star Game nominations, 4 Cy Young Awards, a Triple Crown, and a Gold Glove Award. He also competed with baseballs greats Nolan Ryan and Gaylord Perry in the early 1980s for the all-time strikeout record, finishing just short of 4,000 at the end of his Phillies career. His #32 was retired by the Phillies organization in 1989 in recognition of his stellar career, and he was immortalized in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994.
